Holiday Services at First Parish Church of Groton
Paper Bag Nativity Pageant – Sunday, December 18, 10 AM
Join us for a no stress, usually hilarious and always poignant Nativity Pageant. Come pull a costume out of a paper bag and join the story. There are usually more shepherds than sheep; the number of wise people varies from year to year, as do the visitors to Bethlehem. Children are also invited to wear their own favorite costumes – all are welcome at our stable to help bring to life the nativity story, both ancient and new, of how love is born into this world.
Winter Solstice Service – Wednesday, Dec. 21, 7:00 PM
We gather outside in front of the church. All ages are welcome to bundle up and join us under the stars to rest in the darkness and honor the passing of the longest night. We will have a fire, songs, poems, and simple rituals. Here are the lyrics we will sing.
Blue Christmas Service – Friday, December 23, 6:00 PM
The December holiday season can be a source of true delight— and it can feel like the expectation of joyfulness at a time when we may not always feel so jubilant. Blue Christmas services are contemplative, offering space for you to be authentically how you are. Many people experience complex emotions this time of year. In community we’ll make room for the tender pain, loss, grief, loneliness, worry, and lament. Li and Nate Clark will lead a spirit-filled evening of poems, songs, candles and silence.
Christmas Eve Services – Saturday, December 24
5:30 PM This service is for all ages, especially families with children and the young at heart! It includes stories, halos, bells and crowns, and the sweet music of the children’s choir.
7:30 PM: This service is quieter and more meditative and includes beautiful music from the Adult Choir and a message from the minister.
Both of these services include carol singing and the tradition of passing the candlelight to each other as we sing Silent Night in the candlelit sanctuary, for the first time in two years. There will be cookies and cider following each service. All are always welcome.
11:30 PM: Midnight Service Welcome in Christmas Day with this quiet service of songs, poems and guitar.
Christmas Day Service – Sunday, December 25, 10 AM
Come in your pajamas, bring your coffee, tea or hot cocoa and join us for a service of carol singing and candle lighting on Christmas morning.
Lunch Making Service – Sunday, January 1, 10 AM
All ages and abilities gather to make sandwiches and pack over 200 bag lunches for residents of 5 area shelters. We also make homemade cards with messages of hope for each lunch bag, which staff tell us are as appreciated as the food. Begin the new year in service to others. Donations of nut-fee cookies to back in the lunch bags are welcome.
